The man may have impersonated a Maryland state trooper, and now real ones are after him.

The state police said they received a report of a man who appeared to be dressed like a trooper and who knocked on a Sykesville resident's door about 11 a.m. yesterday to solicit donations for the agency's aviation division and for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

The resident, who lives in the 2800 block of Old Liberty Road, said the uniformed man was carrying a black leather bag and a clipboard with what appeared to be state police letterhead. The resident, whose name was not released, did not believe the man was a trooper, refused to make a donation and called police, authorities said.

Troopers searched in the area, but did not find the man, according to a news release from the state police.
The state police said their agency and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office are not soliciting donations.

They described the man as a black, 6 feet 2 inches tall, about 150 pounds and wearing a uniform similar to a state trooper's. Anyone who believes he or she has seen this man is asked to call the state police's Westminster barracks at 410-386-3000 or the Carroll County Sheriff's Office at 410-386-2900.
