A report is still pending on possible charges being filed after the arrest of Michael Goodwin, which capped a six-hour standoff with Pennsylvania State Police. The incident occurred along Lakeview Road just east of Hamlin off Route 590 in Salem Township, Tuesday. Goodwin was apprehended at approximately 7:30 p.m.
One State Police member was injured during the incident. Pa. State Police, Bureau of Integrity and Professional Standards, reports that the shooting occurred as the weapon of one member of the Special Emergency Response Team, (SERT), appears to have accidentally discharged, striking another SERT members in the foot.
SERT was activated to respond to the barricaded gunman, In darkness and pouring rain, the team members were covertly moving towards the residence through dense brush and trees, when the firearm discharged, the police report states. The wounded member was transported for treatment and remains in good condition.
The names of the members will not be released due to the pending administrative investigation. They will remain on administrative duties until cleared by the Department’s Members Assistance Program and the Bureau of Integrity and Professional Standards.
The police report states it is standard procedure for the Department to conduct an administrative investigation in a shooting.
"Mr. Goodwin had shot a gun off of his back porch while his estranged wife and two family friends were packing her belongings inside the house," said Trooper Connie Devens in a published report. The incident began around 1:30 p.m. and ended when Goodwin surrendered to police at about 7:30 p.m.
