A "loved" 11-year veteran of the Peabody Fire Department died this afternoon after collapsing inside a burning apartment building after he succumbed to toxic fumes, Fire Chief Steven Padson said this evening.
Firefighter James "Jim" Rice, 46, leaves behind a wife and three children.
"I regret to announce Firefighter James Rice succumbed to his injuries," an emotional Padson said.
Padson said Rice did "take in some toxic fumes" and collapsed while battling the three-alarm blaze.
