Thursday, November 11, 2004

PEABODY -- Police and the FBI are looking for a male suspect who left Eastern Bank Wednesday morning $7,000 richer than before he came in.

Peabody police responded to the Margin Street Eastern Bank shortly after 9 a.m., following numerous panic alarms and a 911 call from officials at the bank.

A suspect described as a light-skinned Hispanic male, approximately 5-feet, 7-inches tall, wearing a dark bandanna on his head, tan jacket, and jeans, passed a note to a teller demanding money. A teller passed the suspect approximately $7,000 to $8,000 in cash and he left the area.

Tellers told police that no weapons were shown, according to Peabody Detective Michael Crane. Nobody in the bank was hurt.

Witnesses told police that they believe the suspect fled on foot to a wooded area. Authorities were searching a nearby cemetery where he may have been spotted, Crane said.

The State Police K-9 unit and the FBI are assisting the Peabody Police Department in the investigation. A surveillance tape was obtained from the bank and will be used in the investigation.
