Passenger Involved In Similar Incident Last Month, Police Say

EAST HAVEN, Conn. -- Two men involved in a pursuit that lasted from East Haven to Wallingford were arrested Tuesday after they were apprehended by police.

Police said they arrested Mark Formica, 39, of New Haven, and Robert Salatto, 36, of Cheshire.

Police said an officer observed a green BMW, operated by Formica, speeding on Frontage Road at about 6:50 p.m. They said the officer attempted to stop the vehicle on Frontage Road, continued to speed south onto Interstate 95, then north on Interstate 91.

Police said Formica was driving erratically on the highway.
The Connecticut State Police assisted in the chase near exit 13. As they approached exit 15, they said, Formica attempted to force the trooper off the road, nearly striking his vehicle.

Formica exited I-91 at exit 15 and continued east on Route 68, now traveling with one flat tire, police said. They said Formica then lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of Durham Road and Dibble Edge Drive and struck a stop sign and tree, disabling the vehicle.

Police said Formica continued to try to drive the vehicle but was unsuccessful.

Officers ordered Formica and Salatto out of the vehicle but both refused, they said.

Once the two were apprehended, police said, Formica was found to have a syringe in his possession.

Police are investigating why Formica refused to stop for the officer.

Formica was charged with Failure to Bring Motor Vehicle to Full Stop, second-degree Reckless Endangerment, Interfering with Police, Reckless Driving, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Operating Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Operating with out Insurance and Operating Under Suspension. Formica was held on a $25,000 bond and arraigned in court on Nov. 12.

Salatto was charged with Interfering with Police and was released on a $25,000 bond. He has a Nov. 19 court date.

Salatto had been involved in a similar incident in East Haven on Oct. 18, police said, when he engaged officers in a pursuit while operating a motorcycle. He was apprehended in that incident after he slowed down, lost his balance and fell off the motorcycle. At that time, he had been transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

An arrest warrant will be applied for Salatto in regard to that incident.
