A 19-year-old woman entering the Floyd County Justice Center last week was arrested after she allegedly placed a cellophane bag of marijuana into a tray before passing through a metal detector, authorities said.

Amanda Kay Evans of Allen was headed to a hearing on assault charges. Floyd County Sheriff John K. Blackburn said yesterday his deputies working the building's security entrance were surprised when Evans placed a cigarette pack, a lighter and the bag of pot into a tray on Oct. 31.

"She grabbed it and put it back in her pocket," Blackburn said. "The deputy said, 'I think I saw something you shouldn't have,' and asked her if she'd mind pulling it back out again."

Allen was permitted to attend her hearing on the assault charge before she was held in the Floyd County jail on a misdemeanor marijuana-possession charge. She was released on a surety bond, court records show, and is due back in court Nov. 29 to be arraigned on the marijuana charge, a deputy district clerk said yesterday.

It was not the first such arrest, Blackburn said. "We catch them every now and then coming in with drugs like that," he said. "Prescription pills falling on the floor, things like that."
