A Roxbury man once hailed as a hero when he was acquitted of stabbing a man to death 14 years ago is back up on murder charges in the stabbing death of man Tuesday night.
David Copeland, 29, of Roxbury was ordered held without bail after he pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges that he murdered John Marshall, 33, with a knife in a parking lot and fled the scene, said Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
In 1994, aged just 15, Copeland was acquitted of murder in the stabbing death of Richard J. Kieley Jr., 29, of Dorchester after witnesses said he had acted to save four terrified children who were alone in their apartment when Kieley broke in.
In the latest incident, Assistant District Attorney Edward Krippendorf told Roxbury District Court yesterday that Copeland and Marshall encountered each other in a parking lot near the intersection of Dale and Regent streets at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Krippendorf said Copeland stabbed Marshall at least four times before fleeing the scene.
He said Copeland, covered in blood, was spotted shortly afterwards and traced to a nearby apartment after police officers followed a trail of blood left on walls and the apartment door.
Police said that Copeland had tried to wash the blood off himself and removed the bloodstained clothing he had been wearing before he was arrested.
Copeland claimed he had been inside the apartment since late Tuesday morning. Those statements, Krippendorf said, were contradicted by video surveillance footage and witness statements.
Cops say they found a hat at the crime scene similar to one seen being worn by the defendant in surveillance footage.
