WINOOSKI -- Winooski Police say they are questioning a Winooski man in connection with the shooting death Wednesday night of the man's 28-year-old girlfriend.

Laura-Jean Cousens, formerly of Winooski, was found unconscious in an apartment at 10 East St. with a bullet wound to the head. One of the tenants, a man who is not a suspect in the case, called 911 at about 11:30 p.m., police said. Cousens later died at Fletcher Allen Hospital.

Stephen Marsh, 24, the apartment's other tenant, will likely be charged in connection with the homicide, said Winooski Police Deputy Chief Rich Benoit. Marsh was still being questioned at press time.

"We do anticipate the state will bring a charge and he will be arraigned later this afternoon," Benoit said.

Marsh was romantically involved with Cousens, who doesn't appear to have been shot during any kind of domestic dispute, said Benoit.

Benoit said detectives have the weapon - a 9mm handgun - that was used to shoot Cousens minutes before police received the 911 call.
