Timothy L. Lantz, 56, of Columbus, has been taken into custody in the Phillipines after an international search for him that began in January of 2007.
Gregory Lockhart, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio announced Lantz's arrest Tuesday.
Lantz fled Columbus in January of 2007 after FBI Agents searched his west Columbus apartment and seized several computers, hard drives and other media. Forensic analysis uncovered more than 3,000 images of child pornography on the computers and storage media.
A federal grand jury indicted Lantz in January of 2008. The ten-count indictment charged him with advertising child pornography and attempting to induce a minor to engage in sexually-explicit conduct. He was also charged with possession and transportation of child pornography and failure to register as a sex offender as required by law.
Because of his prior record as a convicted sex offender, Lantz could face a minimum 35-year sentence or a maximum life prison sentence if he is convicted of these new cahrges.
"Child pornography has become an international crime," Lockhart said. "International cooperation is the only way to fight it effectively."
" The Marshals Service tracked Lantz to the Phillipines by sharing information between U.S. and foreign law enforcement agencies," said James Walhrab, United States Marshal for the Southern District Of Ohio.
Lantz was arrested in the Phillipines on June 20 and was turned over to the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service in Manila.
Deputy Marshals escorted Lantz back to the United States where he received a hearing before a Federal Magistrate in San Francisco Monday. Lantz will be transported back to Columbus to face the federal charges.
