RALEIGH, NC - Two Raleigh police officers were charged with not wearing their seat belts last week as they headed to the scene of a chase that ended with the shooting of a carjacking suspect.Lea Marie Younker, 30, and James Edward Clifton, 51, were responding to a chase involving carjacking suspect Renford Butler of Durham on Aug. 5.
The patrol car driven by Younker collided with a Nissan at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Grantland Drive, then struck a retaining wall and a parked vehicle before coming to rest on a porch.
Police say Butler stole a taxicab and crashed into a van near the intersection of Lane and Dawson streets. A police officer later shot Butler; a preliminary police report on the shooting says that Officer J. Bloodworth fired after Butler threatened him and that he thought Butler had already slashed another officer with a straight razor.
An investigation is continuing, but Younker and Clifton were charged Tuesday with not wearing seat belts, a violation of state law and department policy.
