EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. - A federal jury has convicted a former Alton police officer of stealing from the police evidence vault to fund his gambling habit.

**** Dooley was convicted Friday of eight felonies, ranging from fraud to concealing evidence.

Prosecutors told the jury that Dooley's gambling was out of control. They said the 24-year veteran of the force once took almost $9,500 from the vault, then lost all but $1.75 of it at the Alton Belle casino.

Defense attorney Gordon Freese argued during the trial that four different officers had access to the vault key and they conspired to blame the missing evidence on Dooley.
