WATERTOWN, Conn. (AP) - A police officer in Watertown rescued a 1-year-old child as a fire began to burn out of control at a family's house.
Officer Jeff Desena removed the child from an upstairs crib Sunday morning as the flames picked up and the smoke became overwhelming. The child's mother managed to get her three other children, including the 1-year-old's twin, to safety.
Officials say the fire began in the basement shortly before 10:30 a.m. The cause remains under investigation. A firefighter was injured while tripping and falling at the scene. His condition is not available. No one else was hurt.
The blaze caused extensive damage to the Parks family's ranch-style home. They're living with relatives while they determine what to do next.
Michael Parks says he and his wife don't know what they would have done without the officer's help.
