Officer kills teen during struggle;
Boy, 17, tried to take sergeant's gun, police sayBOB PURVIS, Staff, Milwaukee Journal Sentinelmpd

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed early Sunday while reaching for a Milwaukee police sergeant's gun, police said.

Police refused to identify the boy or the 42-year-old sergeant who killed him.

According to a department news release:

The sergeant was patrolling the area Sunday when he was flagged down by residents in the 2300 block of S. 28th St. The officer saw the boy and a female fighting.

The sergeant called for backup after the boy ignored his commands.

The boy attacked, and attempted to disarm, the sergeant, police said.

The sergeant fired one shot, which struck and killed the boy.

Police wouldn't say where the boy was shot and placed a hold on an investigative report at the Milwaukee County medical examiner's office.

The sergeant, who has been at the department for 10 years and works in District 6 on the south and southwest sides, was treated for cuts and bruises at a hospital, police said.

A group of young adults at the home where the quarrel began declined comment Sunday afternoon and said they didn't know the boy who was killed.

Two votive candles bearing an image of Christ and the Virgin Mary marked the spot where the boy was shot.

A neighbor who witnessed the shooting after hearing a group of men and women quarreling outside said he believed the officer was acting in self- defense.

"I seen the kid hit the cop a couple times," Terry Brown said. "He had a reason to shoot him, I think."

The shooting is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County district attorney's office.

As standard operating procedure, the sergeant was placed on administrative duty pending completion of the investigation.
