DARTMOUTH - A Dartmouth police officer suffered minor injuries Friday when his cruiser was struck broadside at Slocum and State roads.
Lt. Ken Cotta, public information officer for the Police Department, said Officer Scott Affonce was treated and released from St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, after the accident at 5:40 p.m.
He said Officer Affonce was traveling south on Slocum Road and approached a red light at State Road with his lights and siren both activated.
He stopped at the red light and then proceeded through the intersection, he said.
The cruiser, a 2008 Crown Victoria, was struck broadside by a 1998 Nissan, which was traveling east on State Road.
Officer Affonce's account of the accident was corroborated by witnesses at the scene, Lt. Cotta said.
The operator, Vamshidhar Boyapally, 19, of New Bedford, was cited for failing to yield for an emergency vehicle.
The cruiser suffered "considerable damage," according to Lt. Cotta, and was towed from the scene.
