Officer faces assault charges

PITTSFIELD - A part-time Hinsdale police officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman who had called for his help.
W. Rodney Maloney pleaded not guilty on Monday at his arraignment in Central Berkshire District Court on one charge of indecent assault and battery. He was released on personal recognizance and ordered not to have contact with the 50-year-old alleged victim.
Authorities say the woman called police in 2005 about a fisher cat that she had seen around her residence. The 46-year-old Maloney, the town's animal control officer, responded in uniform and after looking for the animal allegedly grabbed the woman's hand and rubbed it against his pants.
Maloney has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case. He denied the allegations to investigators.
