TYLER, Texas — An East Texas policeman is hospitalized today in fair condition after a confrontation with two burglary suspects that left one dead.
Authorities say Officer Jason Ward was airlifted to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after yesterday's incident, in which he was beaten and disarmed.
Officials believe Jason Jermaine Cumby took Ward's gun after the officer chased him.
A Texas Rangers report says Cumby charged toward two Henderson County constables, who had been in the area for a funeral and responded to the disturbance.
Investigators say they came upon Cumby, who fired at the constables -- using the injured policeman's gun.
Cumby was shot and killed when one of the constables returned fire. Those two lawmen weren't hurt.
Another suspect was taken into custody.
Authorities say items stolen during the burglary were found in a car used by the two suspects.
