NYPD replaces 'thug' target

NEW YORK -- He's been the face of target practice at the New York Police Department's firing range since the 1960s. But even The Thug apparently can only get shot so many times.

The paper target that rookies have been taking aim at for generations is slowly being replaced by two new faces. One seems like a dead-ringer for Mr. Clean; the other is some kind of non-human creature.

Police spokesman Paul Browne says instructors have complained that a shaded portion of The Thug -- officially known as Silhouette SP-83A -- makes it difficult to see shot patterns. The new targets make this easier.

The new ones are already in use, usurping The Thug's longtime monopoly on police target practice.

It's unclear when he'll finally be put to rest.
