NORTH ATTLEBORO - Police are seeking the public's help in finding the person or persons responsible for stealing a car Saturday afternoon from the Cumberland Farms store on Kelley Boulevard.

While car thefts aren't unusual, this one has an unusual twist. The thief also stole an undetermined amount of money from the front seat of the car, and then quickly dumped the vehicle.

The car was running, but locked at the time it was reportedly stolen, and the thief allegedly smashed a window to steal the vehicle. It was found a short time later, dumped on Plain Street by the Interstate 95 bridge.

The car is described as a 1995 Gold Oldsmobile Aurora.

Detective Lt. David Dawes said an employee of Cumberland Farms at 573 Kelley Blvd. was preparing to end work for the day, and make the end-of-shift bank deposit when the car and money were stolen. Dawes said the employee placed the bank deposit bags inside the running, locked the car and then ran back inside the store. When the employee came back outside, the car and the money were missing.

Police were notified of the stolen car around 2:41 p.m., Saturday, and officials immediately broadcast a description of the vehicle to Attleboro, Plainville, Mansfield and other surrounding police departments. The car was found about 10 to 15 minutes later, dumped on Plain Street with a smashed passenger window.

Police are asking for anyone who saw anything or anybody suspicious either at or near Cumberland Farms or near Plain Street where the car was found dumped to call police at 508-695-1212 and ask for the detectives.

Dawes said there was an undetermined amount of money in the deposit bags, and police need the help of anyone who possibly witnessed anything unusual or suspicious to call police to assist in the investigation.
