SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A 75-year-old man who was convicted of attempted battery with a deadly weapon for shooting at a South Bend police officer won't spend any time in jail.
St. Joseph Superior Judge Roland Chamblee Jr. on Thursday gave Jerome Osborn a 2-year suspended sentence and ordered him placed on probation for two years.
Authorities say Osborn traded gunfire with two South Bend police officers who were outside his home on March 25, 2007.
Osborn testified he thought the two officers were intruders because it was dark outside and they failed to identify themselves. One officer suffered minor injuries.
The officers had been checking vacant houses while on routine patrol.
