ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD -- A police officer was recovering Friday after having part of his ear bitten off by a dog.Officer Michael McDermott was off duty Thursday evening and at his home in the West River Community when his neighbor's son asked him to rescue his dog, which was trapped under a fallen tree.Police Sgt. John Gilmer said McDermott tried to use a leash, towel and garden cart to rescue the dog.
McDermott asked the boy to use the leash to muzzle the dog, and the officer was able to lift the tree off the dog.As the officer was attempting to take the muzzle off the dog, however, the animal bit off part of the officer's ear, Gilmer said. The dog was rushed to an animal hospital, where it was euthanized because its injuries were so severe.McDermott was initially taken to the Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he was treated and released.Gilmer said the officer went to a plastic surgeon Friday for surgery.McDermott is a retired New York City Police detective and has worked as a patrolman in Anne Arundel County for six months.
