This Toyota Camry was involved in a three-car accident on I-290 in Marlborough.

MARLBOROUGH - A three-car crash on Interstate-290 yesterday morning sent nine people to Marlborough Hospital with minor injuries, forcing the hospital to divert emergency patients to other hospitals for about four hours, officials said.

"The diversion was a result of all of the patients coming in (from the crash)," said hospital spokeswoman Melissa Hodgson. "It is unusual to have that many patients come in simultaneously."

As traffic in the eastbound lane of I-290 slowed approaching its intersection with Interstate-495, a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg crashed into a 2003 Toyota Camry, sending the Camry into a 2001 Ford Windstar minivan, said state police Lt. Eric Anderson. The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m.

The Windstar's seven passengers, including five juveniles, were taken to Marlborough Hospital, along with a driver and passenger from the Camry, said Anderson.

Police identified the Windstar's adult occupants as driver Kathleen Hakenson, 37, of Worcester and passenger Michelle Hakenson, 41, of Oxford.

The Camry was driven by Stephanie Shaw, 24, of Worcester and had an unidentified male passenger, police said.

No one from the Touareg was taken to the hospital, police said. All nine patients were treated and released yesterday, Hodgson said.

When Marlborough Hospital is on diversion, there is no default hospital, Hodgson said, rather, emergency medical workers decide where to take patients based on the severity of the injury and in what town the injury occurred.

Anderson said the middle lane of I-290 East was closed for about 15 minutes after the crash.
