KEENE, N.H. -- A former youth counselor accused of having sex with a student backed out of a plea deal Monday after a judge rejected the negotiated sentence.
Twenty-nine-year-old Cathleen Crowley is charged with two counts of felonious sexual assault. Prosecutors say Crowley had two sexual encounters with the boy, which Crowley denies.
She was expected to receive probation and suspended one-year sentences for misdemeanor charges of sexual assault and giving alcohol to a minor. The judge instead chose six months in jail because of the boy's age and the position of authority she held over him as his counselor at a program for troubled youth.
In a plea deal, the defendant can back out if a judge gives a harsher sentence, but if convicted at trial, Crowley could face up to 16 years in prison.
