NEWTON, Mass. -- A newborn baby found abandoned in a canvas bag on the doorstep of a Newton house is in good condition at a nearby hospital.
Police say an elderly man found the baby around noon Wednesday after going outside to check his mail.
The baby, its umbilical cord still attached, was in the bag along with a blanket and pillow.
Newton-Wellesley Hospital spokesman Brian O'Dea told The Boston Globe that doctors estimate the girl was born sometime between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
He said the girl, who appears to be of African-American or Hispanic descent, was in "excellent condition" and had been cleaned and dried prior to being left.
He said the child has begun eating and weighed about 6.4 pounds
