Map of gun owners published by New York newspaper

Using information gathered from Freedom of Information requests, a New York paper owned by Gannett published the names and addresses of legal handgun permit holders in two counties, Breitbart.com reported Monday.
"The newspaper didn't even feel it necessary to publish a rationale for that violation of privacy - publishing the names and addresses of gun owners makes them more vulnerable to robbery when they aren't at home, since criminals will know where the guns are," Ben Shapiro wrote.
The Journal News then posted a map showing where the gun owners live.
"The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun - a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns - rifles or shotguns - which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so," the Journal News said.
"Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis," the publication added.
Reaction to the article was not good.

They just made all those people targets. If/When one of those licence holders gets killed or has to kill an intruder "shopping" for guns the blood is literally on the papers hands.I hope the never have a peaceful nights sleep ever.
....or is the local pd going to confiscate the permit holders weapons for safeguarding like wat happened in LOwell (I think)?

The media is like that instigator in high school that started shit where there was previously none.

This is particularly disgusting because they knowingly made these individuals targets in an effort to create news.

EXACTLY along my line of thought...some scumbag can scope out neighbor X's house whom he now knows has a weapon and break in when they are not home and steal said weapon...thus having more guns on the street. Maybe I'm overreacting but you know people will think about doing it.
A list of employees at that news paper should be mailed to every felon in the New York corrections system.
Subject: Easy target list, won't have guns

New York newspaper faces backlash after publishing map of gun permit holders

Published December 25, 2012
FoxNews.com
A local New York newspaper is drawing the ire of its readers after publishing an interactive map that shows the names and addresses of thousands of residents who have handgun permits.
The online map was published by The Journal News along with an article under the headline: "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood."
The newspaper obtained, and then published, the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties through a Freedom of Information Act request.
The article, in explaining the decision to publish the information, pointed to the school massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn., and the concerns of some residents about which of their neighbors might have firearms.
But readers swiftly condemned the move. They pointed out that the interactive map could make the gun owners a target, but also make clear to would-be robbers which homes do not contain a gun.
"Do you fools realize that you also made a map for criminals to use to find homes to rob that have no guns in them to protect themselves?" one reader wrote on Facebook.

Lawsuit time, liberals love lawsuits time to give them a little bit of their own medicine. Suit their ass into bankruptcy. I am pretty sure there are some high price lawyers on that list, get that news paper so tied up with suits and counter suits that they commit seppuku. Find every little bit of information about the "journalist" using freedom of information act and make his life a living Hell.

Will never happen in Ma per MGL. C.66 S.10(d). Disseminating the info NY did is very illegal here for the exact reasons all of you stated.

NOTICE: Firearms records are exempted from the public records statute. G.L c.4,§7 (clause twenty-six)(j). FRB may not disseminate firearms records "to any person, firm, corporation, entity or agency except criminal justice agencies as defined in chapter six and except to the extent such information relates solely to the person making the request and is necessary to the official interests of the entity making the request." G.L. c. 66, § 10(d).

That didn't stop the Patriot Ledger from publishing the home address of one of our police officers on the front page.

No repercussions whatsoever......you think Marsha Coakley is going to do anything?

I heard about that. For the sake of fairness every admin in Deval's office should have their home addresses published. Coakley also does not have a handle on the law, let alone common sense. She believes she's a firearms expert even though she has probably never fired one. Which is why the ag approved roster list makes no sense.

Awesome.

Last time I had an RMV address change, I tried changing it strictly to a PO box. The site wouldn't let me. Maybe when I renew in two years I'll dress up like a bum and tell the clerk I'm homless.

I am almost positive that the Eagle Tribune got a lot of flak for publishing a few Lawrence PD officers' addresses. This had to be around '04 or '05.

I forget the reason for them being published but it was shitty none the less.

With Zabasearch and other online investigative tools, there's no hiding anymore. If someone wants to find my home address, they're going to find it.

They just better be prepared for a super-maximum response if they have evil intentions, and Mrs. Delta784 is a damn good shot herself, never mind me.
