Oct. 17--A Suffolk County police officer was hospitalized yesterday with non-life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a car in Central Islip while providing a motorcycle escort for the funeral procession for a slain college student, police said.
Around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, the officer, who was not identified, was traveling north on Carleton Avenue when a man driving a red sedan on Third Avenue turned left onto the southbound lanes of the avenue and struck the officer head-on, said police and someone, who didn't want to be identified, who saw the accident scene.
The officer was thrown 30 feet, police said. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center with unspecified injuries, and his condition is unknown, police said. The driver, also not identified, stayed at the scene, according to authorities. It was unclear if any charges would be filed against him.
The officer was part of a police escort for the funeral procession of Danielle Calabrese, the slain college student from Islip Terrace. The vehicles were traveling from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in East Islip to the nearby Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip.
Calabrese was a bystander who was killed in a drive-by shooting as she stood across from her boyfriend's house in Brentwood last Friday night.
Police said they escorted her funeral procession because of traffic concerns.
