Sheriff related stuff is a sour topic on this forum. But apparently no, you don't need LE experience to grab this position.

At least it's not another lawyer.

Why would you? You don't need any law enforcement experience or training to become a Reserve Deputy Sheriff.

Mr. Tompkins. Welcome to the Group 4 retirement system.

Even though you've done nothing to deserve it.

For someone to be elected sheriff in most southern and western states you need to have some experience as a police officer, but then again, in those areas sheriff's are actually real cops. A constable would be more than enough experience to be a sheriff in this state!

Im gonna run for sheriff. Here is my platform we stay focused on corrections cause thats our primary duty donate our special tools to the police depts where they belong. No road details thats a police function . Civil process will be given as ot for meaning deputies no hacks. More protection for our deputies behind the walls testing for promotions and a oral board with one member being a union officer. Ecpd 402 for sheriff in 2014

First, you will need to really hone in on your oral abilities, so that you can kindle the support of a few high powered politicians. Getting lessons early will help with experience later!

Second, you will need to fight the uphill battle of tackling the associations of these sheriff's departments. They may all be political hacks, but they do churn up a shit load of money. I was reading a post about one association and how they charge something like $125 per person per year to be a "honorary deputy" and that they have over 1000 members. That is a lot of money, many of whom probably have more money stashed away for the clambakes.

Third, you talked about taking away all the special tools and giving them to local departments. You need to probably off load a bunch of the brand new chargers and other fully marked patrol vehicles and donate them to the communities. A sheriff's department can complete their mission with the use of an unmarked cruiser. No need to have a $2000 paint job that says, "Sheriff Buford T. Justice" on the side of it.

Fourth, you need to have your head examined if you are going to get into a job that everyone in this state who actually works for a living hates. There is a reason why most police officers and departments hate the office of sheriff. It is antiquated and useless.

Fifth, if you do run, you should have your main talking point to be, "I want your support to help eliminate this office and merge it with the DOC. There, we will save the tax payers millions of dollars each year and will have a more uniformed approach to the system of corrections." With that statement right there, you would gander the support of nearly every police officer in the state and their unions!

At any rate, good luck!

I hope he's better received than this guy was...

Why not? We have a Public Safety secretary with no experience as a law enforcement officer. Being buddies with the governor has its perks!

Andrea Cabral has made a pretty good living off the Commonwealth in positions she's not qualified for.

The south has its political games within the Sheriffs department but the shit in this thread is a fucking cartoon.

She's also a traitor.....appointed by Governor Weld as a Republican, and her ample ass was barely in the seat of the office when she switched to the holy and almighty (D).
