A New Orleans police officer who killed a 51-year man in a 2004 car crash has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.
Officials said Leonard D'Arensbourg resigned from the New Orleans Police Department Monday before entering his guilty plea at Criminal District Court.
The 40-year-old d'Arensbourg drove his marked police car into 51-year-old Tommie Varnado's Chevrolet Blazer in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, 2004. At the time, D'Arensbourg, traveling on the Crescent City Connection, was going the wrong way in the car pool lane -- heading toward Algiers in a lane that carries traffic to the east bank.
Prosecutors say that D'Arensbourg drove around a closed crossing arm to head into the commuter lane going the wrong direction.
