It is with deep sadness that I post that New Bedford Police Officer Joseph Camara, 40, who was also a Staff Sgt. with the RI National Guard Military Police was killed in action in Iraq when a Hunmvee he was riding in struck a mine. He was married and the father of three. Also killed in the incident was Sgt. Charles Caldwell, 38, of North Providence, married with no children. Also injured was Specialist Edmund Aponte, 35, of Providence, a married father of 3 was driving the vehicle at the time, is in serious condition.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families. I will post more as I know it.

Its sad that todays kids look up to pro athletes like Pedro, Manny, and Nomar as heros  when we have people like Officer Camara who give their lives for our freedom.

There will be a wake for Ofc. Camara at the Perry Funeral Home on Dartmouth Street in New Bedford on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Church on Rivet Street in New Bedford. His burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery.

I will post more information regarding the walk-through when I have it.

The walk through will be at 7:00pm on Thursday. New Bedford Officers are being bussed to a staging area at the Rural cemetary which is about 3 blocks South of the funeral home.

I would assume that out of town officers would also want to assemble at the Rural Cemetary. Rte 140 South to end at Rte #6 take left (east) onto Rte 6 (local name of Rte #6 is Kempton St) Travel approx 1/4 mile to Rockdale Ave (Cumbies on one corner, diner on the other) Take a right at the lights, South onto Rockdale Ave. Continue S through 2 sets of lights. After 2nd set of lights take your first left onto Grape St. There's either a 7-11 or Cumberlands on your right just before you hit Grape St Travel East onto Grape St. Rural Cemetary will be on your right. Follow Grape St until it ends and take right. Main entrance to Cemetary will be several blocks on your right.

On Friday for the funeral the assembly point will be Buttonwood Park in New Bedford. Take Rte 140 South until it ends at Rte #6. Turn left onto Kempton St, look for Rockdale Ave, Turn right onto Rockdale, Buttonwood Park is two blocks on your right.

The Funeral Mass is 10:00am at Mt. Carmel Church on Rivet St. The route of the procession will be: Rivet St West to Orchard St. Orchard St North to Allen St, Allen St Est to the cemetary. About a 2 mile trip.

Burial is going to be in St John's Cemetary which is about a 4 block walk from Buttonwood Park.
