DARTMOUTH - A New Bedford man was arrested early Tuesday and charged with breaking into three cars in the area of West McCabe Street in Dartmouth.
Robert Trommenschalger, 21, of 6 Warren St. was charged with three counts of breaking and entering an auto, destruction of property and larceny of less than $250. Police also are seeking arrest warrants for Joe M. Matias, 19, who allegedly was involved in the crimes and has two previous outstanding warrants.
At about 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, Dartmouth Police Officer Jose Catan was patrolling the area of West McCabe Street when he saw two suspicious males, according to a press release. When Officer Catan approached them, they fled in separate directions. Officer Catan ran after Mr. Trommenschalger, who was hiding behind a house in the area of Cypress Haven, police said.
After catching Mr. Trommenschalger, Office Catan was approached by neighbors, who told police that they had just returned home and their cars had been broken into.
K-9 Officer Chuck Lackie took police dog Tonka to the scene. The dog tracked from Mr. Trommenschalger's car, parked nearby, to the cars that had been reported broken into. A search of Mr. Trommenschalger's car turned up several items believed to be stolen from the other cars.
According to police, the investigation allowed them to identify Mr. Matias as the second male who ran from Officer Catan.
Dartmouth police urge residents to lock their cars and set the alarms, and not leave any valuable items in their cars.
