NEW BEDFORD -- Four men were arrested on firearms charges last night after another episode of gunfire in the city that police say may be connected to the recent spate of shootings.
"We hope this is the break we were looking for," said Lt. Richard M. Spirlet, police spokesman.
"We have reason to believe that some of the players involved in this crime tonight are involved in some of the acts of violence that have taken place," police Chief Carl K. Moniz said during a hastily called press conference with Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. late last night.
Chief Moniz said the individuals may also be involved in the "loosely organized groups" that have carried out the violence, including the shooting death of Robert Greene Jr. on April 24.
No one was injured during last night's shooting, and police said they don't know who the target was.
Police said they received a report of shots fired about 8:30 p.m., in the area of Coggeshall Street and Acushnet Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found an abandoned vehicle and were told that four dark-skinned males were seen running from the automobile, authorities said.
A witness told officers the four males ran into the third floor of 53 Howard St.
Police went to the apartment and were allowed to enter the residence, where they observed four young men inside the apartment.
Police said they discovered a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun during a protective sweep of the apartment. Article courtesy of the Standard Times News Paper. Last year the city of New Bedford had 11 homicides. During the past two weeks the city has had 12 shootings, resulting in one homicide and 2 men getting wounded. The New Bedford Police have their hands tied over there. I think New Bedford is one of the most violent city's in Massachusetts. Do your agree with me or not, that city is violent. Especially for a city of 90,000 residents.
