Police say copper was target of house break
NEW BEDFORD - Police arrested two alleged, would-be copper thieves during a house break this week on Maxfield Street.
One suspect, identified as Chad Andrew Garner, 27, of New Bedford, was reportedly using the bathroom when police arrived. There was a bag with pipe-cutting tools outside the bathroom door, police said.
The second suspect, James Arthur Donnelly, 19, of New Bedford, was also arrested after police found him hiding in a closet and holding a flashlight. Police said he was carrying $700 in cash. Police responded to the break-in Monday night after the homeowner arrived and noticed the rear sliding door was open. Both men were charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime and possession of burglary tools.
