A new acting police chief and captain will head the department starting Saturday, Chief Robert Pomeroy having retired today.
Town Manager Mark Sylvia appointed Capt. Michael Botieri acting chief and Lt. Victor Higgins acting captain. Both were appointed under Civil Service seniority rules.
Botieri, the department's operations captain, joined the department in 1985. He became a sergeant in 1989 and served as patrol supervisor and shift commander. He became administration captain in 1996 and operations captain in 2000.
Higgins, former head of the detective division, is the department's prosecution supervisor.
Sylvia expects to make permanent appointments to both positions and the second open captain's position in late September or early October, following Civil Service testing.
Capt. Michael Belmont retired in June, leaving the administration captain position vacant.
Assistant Town Manager Melissa Arrighi said assessment tests for chief and captain candidates will be given in late September.
About six members of the department have expressed unofficial interest in taking the chief test. Arrighi did not know how many might take the captain test.
