BEATRICE, Neb. (AP)- A man is dead after being shot by a Gage County law enforcement officer following a standoff in Blue Springs.

A news conference has been scheduled for this afternoon at the Beatrice Police Department. Gage County Attorney Randall Ritnour says authorities received a report of a man armed with a handgun acting suspiciously about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Negotiations were conducted into the early morning hours. The man came out of the residence and fired shots shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday. Officers returned fire, and the man went back inside. He was found dead at about 7:15 a.m.

Ritnour said a grand jury would be called to investigate the shooting. The officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave. The man has not been identified.

Nebraska Officer Involved In Deadly Shooting Back On Force

OMAHA, Neb. --
The police officer who fired the fatal shot in a weekend standoff in Blue Springs has been reinstated to full duty.
Beatrice Police Chief Bruce Lang on Thursday identified the officer as Sean Vest.
Vest shot 62-year-old Gene Zarybnicky early Sunday. The standoff began Saturday evening after a neighbor called police when Zarybnicky showed up at the neighbor's house carrying a pistol.
Zarybnicky then went to his own house.
Zarybnicky eventually stepped out of his house and fired at officers, who fired back.
Vest is a member of the Gage County Emergency Response Team.
A grand jury is expected to be called to investigate the circumstances of the shooting and determine whether Vest's actions were proper.
