Police: Nebraska Man Kills Himself With Chainsaw After Standoff
............
Associated Press
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) -- A man involved in a seven-hour standoff with police killed himself with a chainsaw, the State Patrol said Wednesday.
Grand Island police were trying to arrest Paul E. Smidt Jr., 40, on a warrant charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm. As police approached Smidt's lawn care business at about 5 p.m. CST Tuesday, he refused to let officers enter, State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said.
A State Patrol SWAT team was called in and negotiations continued until after midnight when police entered the building, Collins said.
Armed with a chainsaw, Smidt ran to a back bathroom and barricaded himself inside. Members of the SWAT team entered the bathroom and fired bean bags at Smidt, but he refused to drop the chainsaw and finally lowered his neck over it, Collins said.
As required by state law, a grand jury will investigate Smidt's death, Collins said.
