Nearly 100 animals seized at Southwick farm after complaint about cruelty

As many as 95 animals, from sheep and goats to turtles and parrots, were taken from a Southwick farm today after complaints of animal cruelty, according to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The animals, which were surrendered voluntarily by the owners of the farm, were taken to the society's Nevins Farm in Metheun and to the society's Animal Care and Adoption Center on Union Street in Springfield.

Because the animals were given up voluntarily, the owners of the farm will not be prosecuted and they will not be identified publicly, said Christine Allenberg, the law enforcement officer for the MSPCA.

"The MSPCA's priority is to make life better for these animals," she said. "Prosecutions can drag out and that is not fair to the animals who can be left in limbo. If it is faster not to prosecute, we will take that route."
