Equipment Would Let Police Change Lights To Green

NASHUA, N.H. -- In the aftermath of a crash involving a Nashua police cruiser, the city is considering equipping police cars with transmitters that can change traffic lights.

Nashua fire and rescue equipment already have the system, called Opticom, which allows responders to change red lights to green as they approach an intersection.

City traffic superintendent Wayne Husband said the system has been in city fire vehicles for more than a decade.
Police and city officials are taking another look at whether police cars should have the system after an officer responding to a call broadsided a sport utility vehicle at an intersection last weekend. The officer suffered minor injuries, and the other driver is in the hospital in stable condition.

I'm surprised they have not installed them yet. All emergency vehicles in my area have them.

They're great until someone forgets to shut of the pre-empt switch, and traffic backs up for miles while one light is continuously green.

How about stopping for the traffic signal like the law says we have to?
Because in many places, a red light means traffic backed-up for 100 yards with positive median dividers on both sides, so the only way to get through the intersection in an emergency is make the light turn green early or drive on the wrong side of the road.

Dude, seriously you are such a pogue. I'm sure you're a nice guy but you just don't get it. Delta's spot on. Just keep filing paperwork and watch out for paper cuts....

We have them as corner strobes, when the car is in drive they flash the pattern to pre-empt the light. When you shift into park, they shut off, and it's usually the nozzle heads that leave theirs on.

That must have cost an extra $20 because we don't have them.
