Naples man hits parked cop car - with deputy inside writing a traffic ticket

NAPLES - A Naples man faces DUI charges after a three-car crash on Collier Boulevard sent one deputy and one driver to Physician's Regional Medical Center for minor injuries Friday night.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Artemio Godinez Sanchez, 30, of Naples, was traveling southbound on Collier Boulevard toward Manatee Road. A Collier County Sheriff's officer was conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle on the southbound shoulder just north of Manatee Road. The patrol car emergency lights were on. Sanchez was driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and drifted onto the southbound shoulder where deputy, Robert Acres, 25, of Naples was sitting in his patrol car completing paperwork for the traffic stop.

The right-front end of Sanchez's 1998 Buick sedan collided into the left side of the patrol car and continued south until the right-front end collided into the 2007 Honda sedan that had been stopped by the deputy.

Sanchez's vehicle rotated until it came to a final rest within Collier Boulevard's southbound lanes facing a northerly direction. The other two vehicles traveled in a southerly direction on impact and came to a final rest in the area of the collision.

Sanchez and Acers were transported by Collier County EMS to Physician's Regional Medical Center for minor injuries and were later released, FHP reports say.
The FHP report states the driver of the vehicle that had been pulled over for the traffic stop, Veselin Arabadzhiev, 35, of Maine, did not suffer any injuries.

Damage to the Sanchez's vehicle was estimated at $10,000, damage to the 2005 Ford sedan patrol car was estimated at $10,000 and to Arabadzhiev's 2007 Honda sedan at $5,000.
Sanchez was arrested for DUI, two counts of DUI with property damage, and DUI with personal injury.

Ironically, the deputy was conducting the traffic stop for Arabadzhiev's failure to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle when the crash occurred, FHP reports say.
