N.J. man broke into house, walked home in underwear, cops say

MINISINK - A New Jersey man was charged with breaking into a home and stealing a bottle of wine before walking home in his underwear, state police said.

Andrew Hurth, 38, of Wantage Township, N.J., was arrested Saturday on charges of burglary, a felony, and petit larceny, a misdemeanor. He was arraigned in Wawayanda Town Court and sent to Orange County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

State police at Minisink said the owner of a house at 68 Pine Hill Road in the town of Minisink reported that he heard a noise at about 3 a.m. Saturday but assumed it was made by a pet. Upon waking at about 6:30 a.m., the homeowner discovered a downstairs window open with the screen missing, and a bottle of wine missing from the kitchen.

After searching the property, state troopers found the bottle of wine, which was nearly empty, and a pile of clothing that included pants, a shirt, socks and sneakers. In a pants pocket was a wallet containing Hurth's personal information, police said.
An investigation showed Hurth had been drinking at the Backtrack Inn in the village of Unionville earlier in the evening Saturday, police said. Police said Hurth walked to the Pine Hill Road home after leaving the bar, broke in, left with the bottle of wine and drank most of it in the front yard.

Hurth then walked home in his underwear to his home in Wantage Township, about a quarter of a mile from the state line between New York and New Jersey, police said.
