MSP "Internship"

2746 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Guinness2429
Next semester my internship is coming up and was looking into various police departments. I was wondering if anyone has ever, did an internship with MSP? I know some departments you can just stay at a desk all day and some departments you actually learn something like actually providing you job experience such as a ride along, investigations, community policing . . . Also providing that I may have a chance at an RTT, would it at all benefit me to do my internship with MSP?
All and any suggestions, comments welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

I knew this guy I used to work store security with at Zayre in Dedham did his with Boston PD back in 87, he had nothing but great things to say about it. Of course that was some time ago. He went on to become one of Boston's finest.

Sorry never knew anyone that did one with the MSP.
They do a bunch with the CPAC's but try one of the Gang Units or VFAS for a little more fun
If they allow anything it would be unpaid and paperwork.
Well, we've had some interns out here in Springfield a few times; nice kids, they did some paperwork and did a few ride-alongs. Honestly, I really don't know how they felt about it, or how much they learned. Most of the students were pretty intimidated and didn't talk a lot to us in the barracks, so contact was rather limited. The ride-alongs must have been more interesting, but all the ride-alongs were on dayshift, so you don't get the kind fun you have on eves or mids. Still, the last intern got to ride with one of our best Troopers in a ten minute pursuit! I remember her breathless reaction right after we cuffed the mope: "Wow, we were blowing through lights, going 80mph down city streets....it was just like the movies!!!!! That was fun!"

I currently work in the MSP Detectives assigned to the Norfolk DA's Office and we do have summer interns every year. But, they are not assigned to the MSP personnel, but rather to the office attorneys and support staff. If you are still interested, you should contact the DA's Office near you and ask if they hire summer interns. Thinking back to my days at Foxboro, I believe we had a few interns. Mainly, they did paperwork and data entry. Good luck.

Last summer and into the fall I interned with the troop H Community Action Team in Boston. Overall I had alot of fun. Some paperwork, and office work, some ride alongs. I felt it was a good mix and kept me interested. The Lt. I rode with was aggressive with car stops as the HCAT guys tend to be with a mixture of highway and city patrols depending on what they were focusing on at the time. I remember that it took a few days to get the paperwork and consent forms from the HR dept. and a week or two to clear for the background check involved. If your interested I suggest not waiting till the last minute. It was good to see how the troopers work and some of the differances between them and a local PD that I had previously worked with.

The internship was through Curry College and involved some journal work and some papers and the hours.

I just wish I found out about the internship opportunities with MSP 2-3 years ago. Then I had called the Northampton baraks out in troop B and basicly was told that the MSP doesn't do ride alongs or internships of any kind from the desk officer. Oh well. Interning out of Springfield would have been fun, an area I know well.

PM me with any other questions you may have.

My friend did an internship with the MSP at the Holden barracks. I think he got three credits for it and he ended up compiling accident data from accidents on I-290 that a trooper was going to use in a report regarding possible improvements in the engineering of the road.
If you can make the ride to the Mass. Fire Academy in Stow, the MSP Fire and Explosion Investigation Section usually has a few interns around the office year 'round. I'm not sure what their work involves because I'm not on the arson side of the unit where they work. The number there is (978) 567-3310.
My senior year I did an Intership out at New Braintree. It was a blast lot of paper pushing. They had an SSPO (Campus Police Academy) going through at the time so being an EMT I was able to stand by with members of the Medical Unit while the recruits did PT and would stand by for "sick call". I also got to to be put on stand by when a couple of special opps teams did their training ie Bomb Squad and the S.T.O.P team in case any member suffered and injury or illness. I also made a lot of connections not from just troopers but from Local P.D.'s and Campus P.D.'s taking classes at New Braintree
I have a buddy who did his internship out of the medical unit at New Braintree during the 72nd RTT. He is now a local cop in my home town. He did give me a lot of info about the RTT's and what to expect. At the time he wanted to be a Trooper but could never seem to hit the test right and now he has twins so he is pretty much out :)

MSP Internship

I am currently interning with the MSP Underwater Recovery Unit out of Westover Airforce Base. Program is through Westfield State College. Great experience and lots of field experience.

G,

You know any of the Detectives over in the Middlesex DA's office? I

Yes, I do know several of the detectives over there, including the commander, Lt. Powers. Probably the most dedicated and seasoned group of homicide investigators on the MSP(except for the Norfolk Detectives, of course  ).
