Freetown -
They'll be revving their engines for a good cause.
The Playground Committee is planning a mystery motorcycle run and family fun day at the elementary school. Funds raised will to toward a new pre-kindergarten through first grade playground. The family fun day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, while the approximate 90-minute motorcycle run will begin at noon.
The cost of the motorcycle run will be $20 per rider and $35 for two on the cycle The costs include the pig roast that day for the hungry riders.
Diane Huling, treasurer of the Freetown Elementary School Playground Committee, said the group has raised about $12,000 for the effort but needs about $30,000 to build a new playground for its youngest school-aged children. She said the group is in need of about $23,000 in equipment and $7,000 to cover installation and surfacing costs.
"We still have a ways to go," said Huling, who also teaches fourth grade at the elementary school.
But the fun day should be a great effort toward kick-starting the group toward its goal.
Participants can look forward to a dunk tank, games, a bake sale, balloons, relay races, pony rides, bouncy equipment and a pie-eating contest.
The Police Department and Fire Department are also expected to attend and give demonstrations, including a tour of a rescue truck, Huling said.
Huling said the motorcycle run will bring participants on a mystery route and will hopefully allow for photos with the drivers at the end.
Huling said three years ago a similar fundraiser was held, and it raised $3,000. She said she has hopes that this one will also be a success.
Also around three years ago, the committee finished the first playground for kids in second grade through fourth grade.
To donate to the committee, send checks payable to the Freetown Elementary School Playground Fund. Donations can be sent to 43 Bullock Road, East Freetown, MA 02717.
