PORTER RANCH CA Six people found dead Monday at a home in Porter Ranch were believed to be family members who were shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide.

A man who was despondent over financial woes shot and killed his wife, three sons and mother-in-law before turning the gun on himself, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The bodies were discovered at 20644 Como Lane, which is in a gated community, at 7:15 a.m. Officers were asked to stop by the residence by a friend of the 39-year-old mother when she did not stop by the neighbor's home Monday morning as expected.

Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Michael Moore, who spoke to reporters outside the home in the upscale Sorrento section of Porter Ranch, called it "a very tragic scene ... absolute devastation inside this home."

"Inside the home, officers discovered six bodies, all belonging to the family that lived at this location ... We believe this to be a murder-suicide," he said.

He said investigators believe the 45-year-old father killed his wife, 19-, 12- and 7-year-old sons and his 70-year-old mother-in-law, before turning the weapon on himself, sometime after 6 p.m. Saturday.

The bodies were found in various bedrooms of the home, and a handgun was recovered where the father was found, Moore said.

"The handgun that was discovered here on scene was recently purchased, only on the 16th of September," he said.

Three letters were also found inside the residence, Moore said.

"One was addressed to law enforcement. We've opened that letter and ... the contents, while I'll not divulge all of it ... attests to his responsibility for taking of the lives of his family members and then himself," he said.

"There's also a second letter, also a suicide note, and then a third letter or an envelope that we believe was meant to represent his last will and testament," Moore said.

"Preliminarily, we know that the suspect ... has been unemployed for the past several months," he said. "In the past, we understand he's worked for major accounting firms such as Price Waterhouse and perhaps Sony Pictures. It appears that he had an MBA in finance."

Moore said he could not provide the specifics of the note, "other than he attests to some financial difficulties and he takes responsibility for the taking of the lives of his family members and himself as a result of those financial difficulties."

He said the man appeared to have no prior contact with mental health professionals within Los Angeles County.

"We believe that he has become despondent recently over financial dealings and the financial situation of his household, and that this murder-suicide event is a direct result of that," Moore said.

Police did not immediately release any names, but the LAPD was working with the Los Angeles Unified School District to arrange for crisis response teams to be dispatched to the two local schools that the 7- and 12-year-old victims attended, Moore said.

A crisis response team from the mayor's office also responded to assist the family's friends and neighbors.

Imagine being the officers who went inside to do the welfare check and found everyone dead, especially the kids. That had to have been a hard thing to deal with.

I've responded to several of these types of things in the past that included kids who have been shot but not this many people at one time. What a bummer.

According to one of the notes he left behind, he took the whole family with him because it was the "only honorable thing to do." Go figure..

" Honorable " .. honorable would have been to suck it up, go out and get another job and work through it, like all of us are..or if you must...shoot yourself..but not the kids..thats cowardly...
