The Department of Public Safety has confirmed that one of their employees was killed and three others are wounded after a shootout with a standoff suspect in Tishomingo County.

DPS spokesman Warren Strain said Lee Tartt, 44, was killed in the line of duty in the standoff situation in Tishomingo County.

Further details in the incident are not being released at this point, as MBI agents are on the scene in the early stages of an investigation.

"It’s a shock, we’re working through it right now," Strain said.

The identities of the troopers have not been released.

The suspect has also been killed.

Tartt was the 2011 MBN Agent of the year.

Gov. Phil Bryant issued a statement Saturday morning about Tartt.

"Our men and women in law enforcement put themselves in harm's way every hour of every shift. This is a tragic reminder that their willingness to serve can exact the highest price," he said. "Deborah and I ask all Mississippians to join us in praying for the family of the fallen officer. May God hold him in the hollow of His hand."

Tishomingo County coroner Mack Wilemon said he could not speak to the nature of the injuries until the investigation has progressed further. He said the SWAT team was making entry into the home when the agent and the suspect were killed and the other SWAT members were injured.

Officials told reporters on Friday night that a man had taken his wife and child hostage inside a home south of Iuka, near the Alabama state line. It wasn't clear if they were actually hostages or if they were free to come and go, according to some officials.

Tishomingo County deputies, MHP and MBN were on scene, witnesses said.

When the wife and child left the home, the man opened fire on the officers, according to witnesses.

His name has not yet been released either.

The three injured officers are being treated at various hospitals at this point, Strain said.

This is a developing story. We will update as we have more.
