DODGE CENTER, MINNESOTA -- A police officer shot and killed a suspect in a grocery store parking lot Tuesday after the suspect allegedly struck an undercover agent with his car during a drug deal.
The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of John's Foods, a grocery store on the eastern edge of Dodge Center along Dodge County Highway 34.
According to authorities, a special agent with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was standing in the parking lot negotiating a drug deal with the suspect, who was in his car. Details about what happened next are still unclear. But authorities say the suspect at some point rammed his car into the agent.
An Owatonna police officer with the South Central Drug Task Force, who was keeping an eye on the undercover deal, then shot and killed the suspect, said Tim O'Malley, BCA superintendent.
The Owatonna officer has been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in this type of case.
The undercover agent was taken by ambulance to Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester with minor injuries. The agent's name is not being released due to the nature of the individual's work.
