GRAND RAPIDS -- A Grand Rapids police officer was shot and killed early this morning outside a home on Emerald Avenue NE near Leonard Street.
The unidentified officer was at the home following a 1:30 a.m. report of a man with a gun threatening to shoot others within the home.
Other officers at the scene reported hearing two shots and then tried radioing the other officer but couldn't get a response.

In a strange twist the following appears in today's news as well:

It was one year ago today that Jeffrey VanVels waited in his Northeast Side garage while police responded to a domestic violence call at his house, then fired the shot through a window that killed Grand Rapids officer Robert Kozminski, 29.

It appears there is an error here:

This story is carried on line as current. In further checking I find that Chief Harry Dolan will hold a press conference. He has not been Chief in that city since last year. This story has been picked up by the wire as fresh while in fact is a year old. here is the actual printout I read.

As suspected, this was an error. The GRAND RAPIDS PRESS has withdrawn its story.
