A Livonia traffic officer is in serious condition at University of Michigan Hospital today after being hit by a car on I-96 while investigating another accident Saturday night.

He’s not doing too good; he’s got quite a few injuries,” Livonia Police Lt. Greg Winn said this morning about Officer Andrew Halttunen. He said Halttunen is expected to survive but has a number of broken bones.
The 19-year-old Redford man who lost control of his 1999 four-door Ford westbound on I-96 at 7:30 p.m. also hit four other people standing on the berm, Winn said. One with a leg injury was taken by ambulance to St. Mary Mercy Hospital, and another went on their own. Both were treated and released, according to a St. Mary spokeswoman.

The driver of the Ford was not injured and police did not issue any citations. But the investigation is continuing, Winn added
