FREDERICK, MD - A man was shot and killed after allegedly threatening a police officer with a claw hammer.

The 52 year-old man was shot multiple times Tuesday morning at the Elmwood Terrace Apartments in Frederick.

Reports indicate the man was attempting to attack Officer Frank Rucci of the Frederick Police Department when he was shot.

Dispatchers got numerous 911 hang-up calls from the Key Parkway address. Police got to the scene around 3:30 a.m.

When Rucci got there, the man started walking toward him with a claw hammer.

Police say the officer asked the man to drop the hammer repeatedly, but he refused.

The suspect then threatened Rucci and charged toward him with the hammer.

The officer fired several shots, and the man later died at the hospital.

The commander with the Criminal Investigation Division in Frederick says officers are specifically trained for these types of incidents.

"In training situations, officers are instructed to continue to fire until the threat is stopped. So it is conceivable that a person can be struck several times by gunfire, yet continue with their same threat, so we train our officers that they should continue shooting until the threat is incapacitated," explained Lieutenant Shawn Martyak with the Frederick Police Department.

Rucci has been placed on paid administrative leave as is the department policy pending an investigation.

The suspect's name has not yet been released as officers are in the process of notifying the family.

This is the first officer-involved shooting for the Frederick City Police Department since 2006..

Two weeks ago Officer Rucci and officer Dan Sullivan captured two burglary suspects charged with breaking into Frederick High School.
