Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph D. McDonald Jr. has been elected as president of the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association and will serve in that capacity through the year 2014.
“It is a great privilege to be asked by my fellow sheriffs to lead our association,” said McDonald. ”Working together, we have made great strides in making our communities safer and enhancing law enforcement across the Commonwealth.”
McDonald will lead the MSA at a time when the public’s attention has been focused on a series of well-publicized trials and investigations. Much of the media focus has been on the sheriffs’ roles in housing and transporting individuals charged with state and federal crimes.
He said the association will also continue to emphasize finding cost-effective measures to address inmate overcrowding, staff development and reducing inmate recidivism.
“Nearly all of the inmates in the county correction system eventually return to our neighborhoods after serving their sentences,” McDonald said. “We have to be smart about finding ways to allow these individuals to reenter our communities in a productive manner.
McDonald previously served as vice president of MSA, which is comprised of the state’s 14 elected sheriffs. McDonald, a former career prosecutor, was first elected as the county’s 30th sheriff in 2004 and re-elected in 2010.
