In Youngstown, Ohio Dover Street is lined with election signs, almost all are supporting democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama but one homeowner, Kenneth Rowles, sports a John McCain sign in his front yard.
Rowles told police over the last few weeks, he had signs stolen and vandalized. And on Saturday morning he thought it was going to happen again.
Police say Rowles told them he saw a boy run towards his sign, screaming "this one is for Obama" and that is when he went inside his house and got a rifle.
Rowles told police he didn't want to hurt anyone.
"He claims he fired warning shot but our evidence shows that he fired into the van at least two times," said Lt. Don Bishop of the Warren Township police department.
And police say he also struck one of the boys, a seventeen year old who lives next door to him, in the arm. Neither the boy or his family members could be reached Monday. but neighbors and officials say they find the allegations, shocking.
"It's crazy," says neighbor, Robert Sisco. "Yell at them, tell them to get out of your yard but don't shoot at them, it's crazy."
Warren City Law Director Greg Hicks, agrees with Sisco.
"We are talking about a plastic political sign, they give them away for free," Hicks said. "I am not advocating stealing signs but you cannot use this type of force for someone knocking over a political sign."
Rowles has plead not guilty to charges of felonious assault and bond has been set at ten thousand dollars. He is jailed pending bail.

Prosecutors and police say they do not believe the boys will face any charges.

CHAPEL HILL, NC-- Shawn Turschak of Chapel Hill was tired of someone stealing McCain-Palin campaign signs from his yard.

So the man with a degree in electrical engineering hooked up a third sign to a power source for an electric pet fence Monday. Turschak also put up a surveillance camera.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Tuesday, a 9-year-old boy with an Obama-Biden sign grabbed the McCain-Palin sign and got a jolt.

The boy's father, Andrew Noble, then showed up at the Turschak's door, upset his son had been shocked. Soon an Orange County sheriff's deputy also showed up at the Turschak's home.
Noble says his son just wanted to see how the sign was put together. Turschak says the boy intended to swap out the signs.
Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass said he doesn't plan to file charges.
