New Units Join Forces With NYPD Safety Squads

January 19, 2004 -- In a rapid response to Mayor Bloomberg's demand for tighter security at toughest city schools, the NYPD is forming two new task forces that could begin operating next week, The Post has learned.

The new task forces - one overseeing Manhattan and Bronx public schools, and the other looking after those in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island - will comprise 70 officers each plus a handful of superiors.

The groups will take direction from the NYPD's School Safety Division and will make high-visibility patrols in and around schools, conducting floor-by-floor sweeps, stationing officers on the grounds and checking on nearby bus and train stops.

Word of the task forces first came from Bloomberg, who announced a decision to put greater focus on school safety and allocate more resources to the task.

In his speech, the mayor listed the city's 12 most dangerous schools, including Evander Childs HS in The Bronx and South Shore HS in Brooklyn, and said the NYPD would detail 150 officers to bring them under control.

While the 12 schools will get the most attention, the task force will go where it needed, putting uniformed cops and more school safety officers in school cafeterias, hallways and perimeter areas, he said.

"If I have to put a police officer next to every kid, we'll do it. We are not going to tolerate disruptive behavior or criminal behavior - period," Bloomberg said at the time.

Other elements of Bloomberg's plan include using cops to crack down on truants and having police captains and top city Department of Education officials inspect all schools.

BE NICE TO SEE MAYORS WHO WANT COPS AROUND HERE IN MASS.

Can you imagine the Oscar Tango $$$ (OT) if that happened?!

Bloomberg grew up in Medford, MA........a Red Sox fan! Now he's a Yankee fan..........never trust a politician!

Where is DARE these days? Are the SRO's (School Resource Officers) a worthy alternative/replacement in the schools today? I'm not sure that a School-Martial-Law type police presence will benefit the majority of students? What if Joe-average, decent kid grows to hate the police because of the lock-down mentality? Just wondering?
