On Saturday, June 16th, 2018, DOC facility investigators intercepted information that an inmate was attempting to obtain a weapon to assault a staff member. Upon review of the information, Commissioner Thomas A. Turco III directed the DOC Office of Investigative Services to conduct an investigation. As a result of the information that was obtained during the investigative process, it was learned that an inmate was plotting to murder the Superintendent at that facility.

The inmate implicated in the plot was initially secured in his cell while facility investigators gathered intelligence and proceeded with an interview. During the interview the inmate admitted that he had been planning to assault an officer and murder the Superintendent of the facility. Investigators from the Office of Investigative Services reviewed evidence obtained during the investigation and determined that if the investigative action had not occurred as quickly or efficiently as it had, the inmate in question would likely have been able to carry out his plan. This determination was not only based on the information that was received and the interview with the inmate, but also on the inmate's history of serious assaults and a previous murder while he was incarcerated in another state. The inmate is currently in DOC custody on an interstate agreement from Maryland and is serving multiple life sentences for murder. The suspect has been transferred to another secure DOC facility until plans can be made for an out of state transfer.

The Massachusetts Department of Correction will continue to work with Federal and Local Authorities as this case continues to be investigated.
